MCC Rose Garden Portraits

Pictured here are portraits for this girl who was having her birthday! Her mom wanted to get portraits of her for her birthday and we met up at the rose garden at MCC in early May 2023. Scroll down to see more!

Have you ever wandered around the rose garden at Mesa Community College?

I went to MCC years ago and my friend Lisa’s dad was one of the volunteers who helped build the multi-acre rose garden. I met Lisa in an art class and we became friends who would go to raves and dancing together. She became friends with my friends, I became friends with her friends, she would invite us out to Apache Junction for homemade Indian food meals made by her mom. I know she had mentioned her dad worked at the rose garden, but years passed without me thinking about actually going to check it out.

I started noticing lots of photographers I follow on Instagram posting pics at a rose farm. From sort of researching/delving through the photos, I could tell the rose farm was on the far west side of the valley. I’ve never actually gone to see that farm. I would love to someday. But looking at those images made me finally remember that here in the east valley we have roses. Not very far from my house!

So my nephew and I went to the MCC rose garden on a really cold day between Christmas and New Years. I just could NOT BELIEVE the floral amazingness of the rose garden. I absolutely did not expect thousands of rose bushes of almost every color to be in bloom at such a cold, wintery time of year! So I definitely learned something that day: roses in Arizona bloom in cold times, around the holidays. Also, I learned that at the same time, the trees in the MCC rose garden were losing their golden and red leaves and it was gorgeous: bright yellow carpets of leaves, bright red carpets of leaves. It was so incredibly pretty. It would make for great portraits for folks who would be OK with lying down on the grass amongst the leaves. Oh and the grass? Super emerald soft winter grass! The type of winter grass you just really want to sink down into and hang out for a while staring up at the sky! Or the roses!

So then I came back a couple weeks later in early January and the roses had been pruned a ton and the garden was rather lackluster. The trees had lost all their leaves.

The MCC rose garden website says:

The best times to see the Rose Garden are late March, April, May, June, November, and December. During January, February, September, and October, the Garden is heavily pruned and will therefore not be in bloom.

So then in April, my nephew and I went back to the rose garden. We brought both his strider bike and his EZ roller bike. I didn’t want him to be bored. Flowers are my jam, not his! There are concrete paths and benches and little walls to climb on all around. So he definitely didn’t get bored, and found all the play opportunities! There were trees in bloom with purple petals and MCC seems to irrigate every other Wednesday, which means water to wade through for my nephew! We ended going back a few times this spring 2023, always on Wednesdays. The rose bushes were just in full out bloom, just thousands and thousands and thousands of multi-colored blooms. I would always get In-N-Out dinner for my nephew and then we wandered/explored/played.

If you are ever looking for a location to have a picnic with friends or a romantic date, I’d suggest going to the MCC rose garden in the spring. You could get takeout from Pita Jungle across the street, lay out a picnic blanket, and have a leisurely, possibly magical experience! And if you wanted an after-dinner walk, the Mesa Community College is a nice place to walk around. There are plenty of trees in all the acres of roses, so there is plenty of shade for the middle of the day, but I think the best time is at sunset when the scent of the roses is in full force - and completely intoxicating!

If you are the type of person who likes to read all the plaques at museums or the type of person who likes to read all the names on tombstones at cemetaries, you might like to go around reading all the names of the roses at the MCC garden. All of them have names and some of the names are really great.

Total aside, not related to roses: if you like trees, check out this cool interactive arboretum map from the MCC website. It shows all the trees on campus and gives data about them. So now I know that one of the biggest trees in the rose garden is a Shamel ash and it is ~86 feet tall and has a trunk diameter of approx. 49 inches. It’s a great tree to get photos under!

I will definitely be doing more photo shoots in the rose garden during the spring of 2024. And I might be doing them in the winter of 2023 (that time of year gets so busy, so I just have to see.) If you would like an Mesa Community Rose Garden shoot, fill out this form and I will make sure to send you info when I decide on times for photo shoots. Or if you have a particular date in mind, inquire and we can figure it out! Most of my shoots begin an hour before sunset for that magical golden light!

Tree with purple flowers

I wonder if the tree with the purple blossoms at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove in Gilbert is in bloom yet. (This is the location where I photographed the Easter egg hunts last month.) When I drove out that way on Saturday, April 22, 2023, they were not yet in bloom. But these photos below of Kim and her husband Jared were taken in the middle of April in 2022. It’s interesting how things change from season to season! I know that in Arizona, 2023 was a much colder and rainier year, so I guess I shouldn’t surprised that blooming would be delayed. Could someone quickly go by there and give me the flower report? ;)

Send me a message, if you would like a photo shoot at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove!

Easter Egg Hunt!

Girl carrying plastic green bucket with bunnies on it, wandering through cottonwood trees hunting for Easter eggs in Gilbert, Arizona.

Heidi and Chris’s daughter searching for Easter eggs.

This was one of my first Easter egg hunt photo shoots more than ten years ago! Heidi and Chris and their kids met up with me in Gilbert and we had a blast!

I’m doing them again this year: portrait sessions for kids and their families in their Easter best, and then egg hunts where I get action shots of all the cuteness of your kids running around finding eggs and filling up their baskets!

EASTER EGG HUNT

AND PORTRAITS

2023

FOUR SILOS FARM

AND OLIVE GROVE

is located here:

14822 South Gilbert Road

Gilbert, AZ 85295

I’m so excited to announce Easter egg hunt and portrait sessions at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove in Gilbert, Arizona this year. I have had such a great time doing them in previous years and can’t wait to do them again!

*****Scroll down below to see all the information about EASTER EGG HUNT AND PORTRAIT SESSIONS 2023.*****

THIS YEAR YOU CAN SPLIT YOUR SESSION WITH ONE OTHER FAMILY. You can split this cost with one other family/household and "share" your session time.  Do you have a friend or sibling who would like to get photos of their family too? Split this session cost and time with them. You arrive at the same time, and I take photos of one family and then the other. You will get individual family pics, but the Easter Egg Hunt photos will most likely have combos of kids in the photos.

PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO START THE PROCESS TO RESERVE AN EASTER EGG HUNT AND PORTRAIT SESSION SPOT. PRICE: $300 + tax - you receive an online gallery of approximately 50 photos. $50 nonrefundable retainer due to book.

Name *
Phone
When I reach out to you after receiving your inquiry, would you prefer a phone call or a text message?
Some people want a call, others find text more convenient!
Time Slots for Saturday, April 8, 2023
If the session you want is no longer available, I will contact you about another time slot. Sessions are around 30 minutes (which leaves me time to hide eggs for the next group/family.)
Will you be splitting the session with another household/family?
Please include names of everyone and ages of children.
Thank you!

Information:

How do I reserve and pay for a spot? Sessions are $300 plus tax. Fill out the form to tell me what time and date you would like. I will communicate with you first via text and email and then give you a call, if you request a call. I will email you an invoice to pay to reserve your spot with a debit or credit card. I will also email you a contract to sign. You will be booked for your session time once you pay your nonrefundable retainer.

How does it work? How many photos do I receive? Show up at the Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove located at 14822 South Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ 85295 about ten minutes before your session. You can park on the street EAST GALVESTON STREET. Please make sure not to confuse this address with the Four Silos Brewery Restaurant in Gilbert. It’s not the same place/location! Once you arrive, we will take some family photos, and then the kids get to hunt for eggs with baskets and eggs that I provide. I chase them around and get cute photos of them hunting for eggs. Then I edit the best photos and send them to you in an online gallery. There will be approximately 50 photos in your online gallery. A note about my style: I try to get a few pics of everyone looking at the camera, but mostly I try to capture fun and the relationship between family members, so we play a few quick games and I snap photos, catching everyone’s smiles, looking at each other and playing around.

How long are these photo shoots? Are they mini sessions? I’ve spaced these photo sessions one hour apart, with the idea that I would give each family at least 30 minutes of time. Sometimes I have kids help me hide eggs for the next set of kids that are coming, if parents are OK with that.

What happens if I have to cancel? What if I or one of my family gets sick? What if I can’t drive there that day? I ask that you pay the remaining balance on the day of the photo shoot, in case you have to cancel. The $50 retainer is nonrefundable as it will already have been spent on the permit for the location and baskets and eggs.

What if it rains? Rain can make for beautiful photos and it usually does not rain for that long in Arizona, so if there is the chance of rain, I still go ahead with photo shoots. However, if the forecast calls for very heavy rain, I will be in contact about canceling or rescheduling.

What should we wear? Feel free to wear your fanciest clothes or casual clothes. Spring colors are fun, but it’s perfectly fine to stick to whatever style you love! High heels may be difficult on the grass (though I know some people can manage! I’m not one of them!)

Do you provide the baskets and eggs? Yes, I provide the baskets and eggs. I have had families bring their own baskets that matched their kids’ outfits, so feel free to bring baskets if you like!

What should I know about a photo shoot an Easter egg hunt and portrait session at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove?

TWO LOCATIONS AND DATES FOR WILDFLOWER PORTRAITS
Please scroll down to read the descriptions of these 2 locations.
Thank you!

ZANJERO LOCATION - This is a water retention area in Gilbert, Arizona. It’s one of the only places I can find within the metro area that has wildflowers. It is a gooooood place for photos. Some of the things that are good about it: EASY parking, close to the freeway so it’s easy to get to, has a LOT of variety for backgrounds, there are almost no people there so you don’t have to worry about people being in the backgrounds of your photos. Right now it has a TON of wildflowers!!!! Soooooo many more than last year.

The bad things about this place: some of the plants are thorny/sticky and you can get goat burrs in your shoes, so you should definitely not wear open toed shoes.

VISTA DEL ORO AND THE BEELINE HWY: Here is the pindrop for this location. Don’t be alarmed by dry and unpretty this place looks on Google streetview. Right now it is green and GORGEOUS and there are SO many different kinds of wildflowers!

Victoria and her daughter met up with me one early evening last April in 2022 for photos in the wildflowers. I absolutely loved how these turned out, though in the almost year since then I have learned more photo editing techniques and I have bought more editing tools for Photoshop, so I kind of want to go back over these and edit them again. We had this field of flowers all to our selves and it was so cute to watch how Vicki’s daughter picked the purple and yellow wildflowers and gave them to her mom.

With all the rain we have had in the last couple months this past winter, I really am so excited about our prospects for amazing wildflowers and even super blooms in Arizona. I’ve gone out searching and found flowers around South Mountain, Usery, and next up I will be exploring Picacho Peak.

I will be announcing Wildflower photo sessions and mini sessions as soon as I figure out when and where to go! If you would like to hear more about those, please subscribe to my newsletter in the form below the photos! They are perfect for engagement photos, maternity, mommy and me, and family photos.
