Round Mountain, Globe, Arizona

Since 2023 I could have sworn this was the story: a woman from Italy immigrated to Globe, AZ & planted the night blooming stock that grows on the hills in spring after rainy winters, covering the hills in a dreamy pinkish purple/purplish pink bloom.

I wanted to photograph these flowers at sunrise, so I left my house at 5 AM. It was so cool driving towards the Superstitions seeing the faintest outline of the mountains at astronomical sunrise. Civil sunrise was at 6:47 AM. I got to Round Mountain at 6:46 AM. Phew. When I first got to Top Of The Hill, I was hit with the star anise fragrance of the flowers before I even saw them. The spicy licorice-adjacent fragrance seems to drift across town.

Back to that woman from Italy. When I first visited Round Mountain, I was so enchanted and came across a story online of a housewife, she was from Italy, she planted them to recreate some beauty from her country.
But now I cannot find that story at all. I searched a lot. I went down rabbit holes, as one does.
This is what I learned: Matthiola longipetala is from the Mediterranean and in the 1800s/1900s European seed companies were selling stock seeds to North American gardeners. Stock seeds bloom quickly, are easily scattered by wind and do well in dry, disturbed soils (like from mining.) There was a significant wave of Italian immigration to Globe, Arizona, driven by the mining boom in the 1800s/1900s. 13 percent of people in Globe report Italian ancestry. There’s no established “Little Italy” in Globe today. The closest you could probably get would be De Marco’s Pizzeria (I went there with my mom once.) And sadly there are no Little Italies in Arizona.

But are we absolutely certain there are no Little Italies in Arizona? I ask because I just rewatched the Northern Exposure episode where Dr. Capra discovers there’s a Little Italy in his Alaskan town! And here’s the thing: it’s only 2 families/2 houses/2 restaurants, but it counts! It’s a very little Little Italy. Ever since I first watched that show, I have kept some hope alive that someday I would come across a Little Italy in my own neighborhood; just neighbors who’d have a tiny restaurant in their basement or backyard – there’d be candles & checkered tablecloths and I would be in the know and pop by whenever I liked.

Going down this line of thinking, I searched online and found the smallest Little Italies. I’ll copy/paste that in the comments. Let me know if you know of any super secret Little Italies here in AZ! And if you want pics amongst these pink-purple flowers, DM me! They won’t be around for long.

(Pics are Round Mountain flowers & downtown Globe. Peep the cats & La Luz del Día.)

I looked up Little Italies in the US. Here are some of the smallest in size:

*****Very Small / Tiny Little Italies (1–3 streets)*****

Little Italy, Niagara Falls
Roughly just a stretch of Pine Avenue
Only a few blocks long
Known for the Niagara Falls Italian Festival
Mostly restaurants, bakeries, and bocce courts rather than a full neighborhood.
Little Italy (Madison Avenue)
A small corridor around Madison Avenue
Historically Italian but now mixed
One of the smallest historic Little Italies still recognized.
The Village
A very small section of downtown Jersey City

The Italian area historically centered on Brunswick Street
Known mainly for church feasts and festivals rather than a large enclave.
Small Little Italies (a few blocks to one district)
Little Italy (Corydon Village)
Essentially one commercial strip on Corydon Avenue
Filled with cafes, gelato shops, and restaurants.
Little Italy
A small historic district near the Missouri River

Bounded by a few streets (Pacific–Center).
Brier Hill
Often called the city’s “Little Italy”
Mostly centered around St. Anthony’s Church
Today only a small pocket of Italian heritage remains.

Sweet Sunflower Baby!

This sunflower shoot in Buckeye, Arizona at Sweet Flower Home farm with Stacey and her baby was done at sunrise on November 2nd. Sunrise sessions sometimes work really well for babies, so I suggest considering them! I will get up early and meet you at the sunflowers! I used a gold light reflector to get that glowy gold look. I shoot sunflower sessions in May and June in Gilbert, Arizona, in Dewey during September and August, and in Buckeye in October and very early November.

We took these photos at the beautiful Sweet Flower Home in Buckeye, Arizona. Every October, the farm rents out their sunflower fields to photographers. Other times of the year, usually in the spring, the farm rents out their broccoli and onion fields to photographers.

Rocker 7 Farm Sunflowers

3646037804.jpg 3646038297.jpg 3646037464.jpg 3646038254.jpg 3646037866.jpg

Hi there! If you are looking for a photographer for Rocker 7 Farm Patch in Buckeye. Arizona for October/November 2025, I am definitely available! Please feel free to CONTACT ME HERE!!

Or if you are interested in my sessions coming up this Fall/Winter 2025, CHECK MY BOOKING SITE HERE!

Rocker 7 Farm Patch, located at 19601 W Broadway Rd, Buckeye, AZ 85326 was the prettiest I had ever seen it on this Friday afternoon in October last year (2024.) The farmers who own Rocker 7 had planted sooooo many more flowers than in past years. Acres more. And they were absolutely gorgeous! And because it was a Friday the place was pretty quiet. I know it gets very lively/busy on the weekends, but pro tip: go on a Thursday or Friday to have the place largely to yourself! It’s so peaceful during the week.

I met up with my cousin K, her husband, and her kids - my little cousins pictured here. K and I live on opposite sides of the valley/metro Phoenix area so I only see her every once in a while. I wish we lived closer!

As I was looking at these photos of my cousins, I started getting curious about how we are related and went down some internet rabbit holes looking things up. I was specifically interested in finding out more about my grandmother Caroline’s mother. All I ever knew about her is that her name was Bessie Park and that she was from northeast Oklahoma. I decided to do the free Ancestry dotcom trial and found out when Bessie Park was born: January 18, 1883 in Oktaha Indian Territory, Oklahoma. I learned that she lost her mother when she was about 8 years old. I always wondered if she was from a native tribe. The one photo I have seen of her makes me think she might have been. Bessie had three children - Caroline, Donald, and Vivienne, but very sadly she passed away when they were still just little kids, with my grandmother Caroline being the oldest at about age 10.

So then I started looking up info about the Oktaha Indian Territory. It was a multicultural settlement within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, just before Oklahoma became a state in 1907. The Muscogee (Creek) people were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in Alabama and Georgia during the 1830s as part of the Trail of Tears. They were displaced to so-called Indian Territory, including the area around Oktaha. The Creek nation was a Matrilineal Society meaning lineage and inheritance were traced through moms and grandmas. Around that time, native children were being forced to attend mission schools and boarding schools and were being kept from speaking their languages, erasing cultural identity.

I often wish I had just a few photographs of my grandmothers and great-grandmothers—and my grandfathers too. I know so few photos were taken back then, so having even one feels like a treasure. It makes me hope that the photos I take today might one day be seen by the descendants of the people in them—offering them a glimpse into their own history.

Oh how much my little cousins love each other!

A little sister and brother framed by sunflowers at Rocker 7 Farm Patch in Buckeye, Arizona, Family portraits.

I like using sunflowers to frame people. There are endless possibilities with this method!

Family of four - mom and dad and son and daugter, standing under palm trees next to tall grass and a cotton field. Mom has dark blond hair and is wearing a red dress. Mom looks happy, kids look content, dad looks calm and serious.

My cousin and her family at Rocker 7 Farm Patch. We walked past the cotton field to this tall grass that was growing near the irrigation portal. It caught the setting sunlight in a beautiful way on this windy evening.
