If you are a morning person, or if you are forced to be a morning person because your babies or kids are morning people, consider doing a sunrise photo session with me at Sweet Flower Home in Buckeye, Arizona this fall 2026! There are so many good things about sunrise photo sessions at Sweet Flower Home. Here are a few I can think of right off the top of my head:

• The temperature can be so much cooler. In Arizona, during the hot months the temps can be 15-20 degrees cooler at sunrise vs afternoon temperatures. 95 degrees vs 75 degrees! Makes wearing clothes that seem more “wintery/autumnal” a little easier.

• Not as crowded or no people at all! These sunflower fields are full of people on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but when we got there early on Saturday morning, we had the place all to ourselves. Acres and acres of sunflowers all to ourselves.

• Sunrises are magical. I schedule my earliest shoots to start before the sun rises, so you will get to see those magical seconds where the sun starts rising above the earth’s edge! I feel like most people see way more sunsets than they do sunrises. Seeing the sun arrive is just a totally different experience than seeing it leave for the day. First you experience the predawn dark, then blue hour, then golden hour, then the bright light of the morning.

• The green flash is real and I am pretty sure I experienced it once in a sunflower field at sunrise. What is the green flash? Scroll down to the end of this post to read about the green flash. Did I really experience it? Hmmm….it only lasted for a second or two, I was not expecting it, and I was all like WHATTTTT WAS THAT??? It was like a shot of light along the horizon, and I remember feeling it was more like blue-green light. Anyways, sunflower sessions at sunrise increase your chances of experiencing the green flash.

• All the birds are out in the morning and you get to hear bird song.

• Your morning hot or iced coffee will taste so much more delicious in a field of sunflowers.

• Mature/open/blooming sunflowers are much more likely to face east. Before they bloom, sunflowers track the sun. They will face east at dawn, then follow the sun westward until sunset, and then reset to the east overnight. This is called heliotropism. When I am taking photographs, I can work with whatever way the sunflowers are facing. No matter what there are challenges: stuff in the background and direction of light being my two main challenges. But I really like sunrise shoots with flowers facing east, because I do not have to work around all the powerlines and farm equipment in the background.

• The morning glories might be in bloom! Scroll down to see those blue flowers, they are morning glories and they bloom at sunrise. Later in the day, they will not be as open or bright.

• You will feel like you accomplished something fun and fantastic for the day and then you earned yourself brunch (maybe at Crepelatte or Goode Roots Patio Cafe in downtown Buckeye or maybe at One Story Social Dining or Anthem Coffee in Verrado ?) and then you will still have the whole long day to go do more fun things, or maybe just go home and chill!

• You get bragging rights for getting yourself and your fam out the door at such an early hour. If you can do that, you can do pretty much anything lol!

• Here is copy/paste from Wikipedia describing the green flash:

  The green flash at sunrise is a brief optical phenomenon that occurs just before the sun rises above the horizon, appearing as a green spot or ray at the top edge of the solar disc. This phenomenon typically lasts only one to two seconds, making it a rare sight for many observers.

  Understanding the Green Flash

  The green flash is a fascinating atmospheric occurrence.

  • Occurrence — The green flash can be seen just before sunrise or just after sunset, when the sun is near the horizon.

  • Duration — It lasts only one to two seconds, which is why many people miss it despite watching sunrises and sunsets regularly.

  • Cause — The phenomenon is caused by atmospheric refraction, which separates sunlight into different colors, allowing the green light to be visible at the rim of the sun.

  • Visibility — Conditions such as clear skies and a flat horizon enhance the chances of witnessing the green flash

Father's Day photo shoots

Father’s Day is coming up! Is your dad in town? Are the dads in your family all getting together on Father’s Day? Want to capture some memories of all you guys?

• The Queen Creek Wash in Queen Creek (morning or evening)

• Veterans Oasis Park in Chandler, AZ (only for the evening time slot)

• The Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, AZ (only for the evening time slot)

• Lost Dutchman State Park (only for the evening time slot, this location requires a parking fee)

I love the idea of all these dads looking back on these photos, and seeing the smiles of their kiddos, thinking of how much bigger/older their kids have become, seeing the connection they have with their little ones. I love the idea that some of these dads might use my images on their social media, on their computer or phone background, framed in their office, maybe a pic in their wallet.

I also love the idea of capturing multiple generations together…it would be a dream to capture a family that had 4 or 5 generations. Kid > Dad > Granddad > Great Granddad > Great Great Granddad! Five generations would be so rare, but I know it exists! That would be so cool to get to photograph.

Rocker 7 Farm Patch Sunflower Photo Session for Tiffany + Family

One day in October 2020 I heard about the sunflower fields planted by this farming family in Buckeye, Arizona. I just had to see these sunflowers for myself and I really wanted to photograph people there. Years before, I had been part of a group of people who made four acres of sunflowers bloom near Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix and I have just loved sunflowers ever since.

I love photographing in the sunflower fields at Rocker 7 Farm Patch (located at 19601 W Broadway Rd. Buckeye, AZ 85326.) I met up with Tiffany and her young adult/teenage kids. Such a beautiful family!

Rocker 7 Farm Patch plants a variety of colors of sunflowers - cream/red/orange/dark red/lemon yellow, and of course the classic dinner plate-sized buttercup deep yellow sunflowers. Rocker 7 is a super popular location and for good reason! You can have a ton of family fun there. In addition to sunflowers, there are food trucks on the weekends, a pumpkin patch (with very reasonably priced pumpkins in all sorts of sizes) picnic tables under a large shaded structure, a large air pillow/jump pillow under shade for kids to run around on, and depending on the year, there are cotton fields or sorghum fields to wander through and get photos.

Going forward I will be doing photo shoots there on weekdays, just because Rocker 7 is such a beloved and popular place for fall entertainment. In all of these photos that you see here, I photoshopped people out of the background. I have found that when I go there on Thursday or Friday afternoons, my clients and I have the place practically to ourselves. And very much the opposite on Saturdays and Sundays when we have to share this gorgeous location with a lot of other sunflower-loving folks! (Although you can beat the crowds by going early.)

Easter Egg Hunt!

This was one of my first Easter egg hunt photo shoots more than ten years ago! Heidi and Chris and their kids met up with me in Gilbert and we had a blast!

I’m doing them again this year: portrait sessions for kids and their families in their Easter best, and then egg hunts where I get action shots of all the cuteness of your kids running around finding eggs and filling up their baskets!

I’m so excited to announce Easter egg hunt and portrait sessions at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove in Gilbert, Arizona this year. I have had such a great time doing them in previous years and can’t wait to do them again!

THIS YEAR YOU CAN SPLIT YOUR SESSION WITH ONE OTHER FAMILY. You can split this cost with one other family/household and "share" your session time.  Do you have a friend or sibling who would like to get photos of their family too? Split this session cost and time with them. You arrive at the same time, and I take photos of one family and then the other. You will get individual family pics, but the Easter Egg Hunt photos will most likely have combos of kids in the photos.

PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO START THE PROCESS TO RESERVE AN EASTER EGG HUNT AND PORTRAIT SESSION SPOT. PRICE: $300 + tax - you receive an online gallery of approximately 50 photos. $50 nonrefundable retainer due to book.

Information:

How do I reserve and pay for a spot? Sessions are $300 plus tax. Fill out the form to tell me what time and date you would like. I will communicate with you first via text and email and then give you a call, if you request a call. I will email you an invoice to pay to reserve your spot with a debit or credit card. I will also email you a contract to sign. You will be booked for your session time once you pay your nonrefundable retainer.

How does it work? How many photos do I receive? Show up at the Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove located at 14822 South Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ 85295 about ten minutes before your session. You can park on the street EAST GALVESTON STREET. Please make sure not to confuse this address with the Four Silos Brewery Restaurant in Gilbert. It’s not the same place/location! Once you arrive, we will take some family photos, and then the kids get to hunt for eggs with baskets and eggs that I provide. I chase them around and get cute photos of them hunting for eggs. Then I edit the best photos and send them to you in an online gallery. There will be approximately 50 photos in your online gallery. A note about my style: I try to get a few pics of everyone looking at the camera, but mostly I try to capture fun and the relationship between family members, so we play a few quick games and I snap photos, catching everyone’s smiles, looking at each other and playing around.

How long are these photo shoots? Are they mini sessions? I’ve spaced these photo sessions one hour apart, with the idea that I would give each family at least 30 minutes of time. Sometimes I have kids help me hide eggs for the next set of kids that are coming, if parents are OK with that.

What happens if I have to cancel? What if I or one of my family gets sick? What if I can’t drive there that day? I ask that you pay the remaining balance on the day of the photo shoot, in case you have to cancel. The $50 retainer is nonrefundable as it will already have been spent on the permit for the location and baskets and eggs.

What if it rains? Rain can make for beautiful photos and it usually does not rain for that long in Arizona, so if there is the chance of rain, I still go ahead with photo shoots. However, if the forecast calls for very heavy rain, I will be in contact about canceling or rescheduling.

What should we wear? Feel free to wear your fanciest clothes or casual clothes. Spring colors are fun, but it’s perfectly fine to stick to whatever style you love! High heels may be difficult on the grass (though I know some people can manage! I’m not one of them!)

Do you provide the baskets and eggs? Yes, I provide the baskets and eggs. I have had families bring their own baskets that matched their kids’ outfits, so feel free to bring baskets if you like!

What should I know about a photo shoot an Easter egg hunt and portrait session at Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove?

• I’m excited to meet you and take photos for you! I have had so much fun taking these types of photos in the past and have loved how the photos have turned out. I can’t wait to take photos for you!

• After you get to Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove located at 14822 South Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ 85295, you park in the neighborhood on Galveston Street. At your appointment time, text me at 490-326-8385 and I will come to you.

• Be prepared for tall grass at the Four Silos Farm and Olive Grove that you will walk through/kids will run around in. Since we are outdoors, be prepared for sun, heat, insects, dirt, just all the stuff of nature and the outdoors!

• Since we will be outside in nature, there is the possibility of encountering plants, insects, and animals. Last year I saw a few bees. Plan accordingly if you have any allergies, etc.
